How GitBook charges for sites and members

Do I have to pay to publish a site?

GitBook offers unlimited basic sites for free. If you plan to use custom domains, advanced customizations, or other premium features, you’ll need to upgrade the site to a paid plan.

Your content itself is free — you can create as much as you like, and you’re only charged when it’s published as part of a paid site.

A site with multiple variants counts as a single published site towards your bill.

When am I charged for adding a member?

GitBook’s pricing is based on the number of members in an organization, and the pro-rata billing policy ensures you pay for the correct usage. On monthly plans, you can add or remove members at any time and the change appears on your next monthly invoice. The same applies to yearly plans — though if your pending charges exceed a certain amount, GitBook invoices straight away.

You won’t go through another checkout process when adding a new member to your organization.

Are guests or readers free members?

Access permissions don’t affect member pricing — guests and readers cost the same as other members.

How do I remove organization members?

You need admin permissions to remove members:

1. Go back to your organization Home and click Settings.
2. Click Members under the Organization group.
3. Click the Actions menu next to the member you want to remove.
4. Click Remove and confirm.
