# AI credits

How AI credits work, what uses them, and how credit packs are billed

GitBook's AI features run on AI credits. Each paid site includes a monthly allowance, and you can add a credit pack if you need more.

AI pricing is outcome-based. You're only charged for results you get from an AI feature, not for every request.

## Credits included with your plan

| Site plan | Credits included per site, per month |
| --------- | ------------------------------------ |
| Essential | 2,000                                |
| Ultimate  | 10,000                               |

## What uses credits

| Feature                    | Credits used                          | Available on           |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| AI Assistant Ask | 20 credits per relevant question | Essential and Ultimate |
| AI Assistant Chat | 20 credits per relevant question | Ultimate |
| Auto-updating translations | 30 credits per 1,000 words translated | Essential and Ultimate |

## Credit packs

If your included credits aren't enough, you can buy a credit pack in advance. Larger packs are discounted. For current pack sizes and prices, see our [pricing page](https://www.gitbook.com/pricing).

Credit packs are recurring and billed monthly. If your organization is on an annual plan, credit packs and usage are still charged every month. In your renewal month, site and member charges, usage, and your credit pack all appear on the same invoice.

## Running out of credits

When you run out of credits, usage of AI features can be auto-paused. This is something you can manage from the billing page. To keep using credits, add a credit pack.

## Legacy Translations add-on

The Translations add-on is only available to organizations on legacy pricing. On current plans, auto-updating translations use AI credits instead. See [Legacy pricing](/docs/account-and-billing/plans/legacy-plans.md) for more.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://gitbook.com/docs/account-and-billing/plans/ai-credits.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `build a script that syncs our docs to a CMS` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
