# AI credits and usage

Common questions about AI features, AI credits, and credit packs

## What are AI credits?

AI credits are how GitBook charges for AI features like AI Assistant and auto-updating translations. Each paid site includes credits every month, and you can buy more with a credit pack. See [AI credits](/docs/account-and-billing/plans/ai-credits.md) for details.

## Which GitBook plans include AI features?

Every plan includes AI-ready publishing. Each published site automatically gets Markdown versions of its pages, `llms.txt` and `llms-full.txt` files, and its own MCP server, so LLMs and AI tools can read your docs.

Essential adds AI Assistant Ask, so your readers can get AI answers from your docs. Ultimate includes everything in Essential, plus AI Assistant Chat, AI insights, and Slack, GitHub, and Linear channels.

## How many credits are included in my plan?

Every paid site includes free credits each month: 2,000 credits per Essential site and 10,000 credits per Ultimate site.

## How many credits does an action use?

AI Assistant Ask and AI Assistant Chat use 20 credits per relevant question. Auto-updating translations use 30 credits per 1,000 words translated.

## What does outcome-based pricing mean?

You're only charged for the results you get from an AI feature. For example, AI Assistant only uses credits for relevant answers, and translations only use credits for words actually translated.

## Can I buy more credits at a discount?

Yes. Credit packs are bought in advance, and larger packs are discounted. For current pack sizes and prices, see our [pricing page](https://www.gitbook.com/pricing).

## Are credit packs a one-time purchase?

No. Credit packs are recurring and billed monthly.

## How are credit packs billed on an annual plan?

Credit packs and usage are charged monthly, even on an annual plan. In your renewal month, your site and member charges, usage, and credit pack appear on the same invoice. See the [Billing policy](/docs/account-and-billing/plans/billing-policy.md) for details.

## What happens when I run out of credits?

Usage of AI features can either auto-pause when you run out of credits, or continue based on your settings in the billing page. To keep using credits, add a credit pack.

## What happened to the Premium plan?

The Premium plan is now called Essential. If your site was on Premium, it's now on Essential with the same features. See [Plans](/docs/account-and-billing/plans.md) for what each plan includes.

## Can I still buy the Translations add-on?

The Translations add-on is only available to organizations on [legacy pricing](/docs/account-and-billing/plans/legacy-plans.md). On current plans, auto-updating translations use AI credits.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://gitbook.com/docs/account-and-billing/billing-faq/ai-credits-and-usage.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
